Shree Shantadurga Temple is one of Goa’s important Hindu temples, located at the foothill of Kavlem village in Ponda Taluka. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga, traditionally regarded as the deity who brought peace between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
The present temple was built in the 18th century. Its foundation stone was laid in 1730 and the temple was completed in 1738. The complex was later renovated, including work recorded in 1966. The original shrine was at Quelossim in Salcete before the deity was moved to Kavlem during Portuguese rule.
The temple complex features a large temple tank, Deepastambha and traditional architectural elements. Its peaceful setting at the foothills of Kavlem makes it both a place of worship and an interesting destination for visitors exploring Goa’s cultural and religious heritage.
Visitors can experience the temple’s architecture, spend time in the surrounding complex and learn about Goa’s long temple traditions. The temple is also associated with important annual religious celebrations and festivals.
Shantadurga Temple can be combined with visits to other historic temples in the Ponda region, making it a popular stop on Goa’s temple and heritage routes.
Visitors should dress respectfully and follow temple rules while entering the complex.
