Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is one of Goa’s smallest protected areas and an important mangrove ecosystem located on the western tip of Chorao Island along the Mandovi River. The sanctuary covers around 1.8 square kilometres and is named after renowned Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali.
The sanctuary is particularly popular among birdwatchers and nature lovers. Its mangrove habitat supports a variety of resident and migratory birds, including herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants, sandpipers, curlews and other wetland species. Visitors may also spot mudskippers, crabs and other creatures living within the mangrove ecosystem.
One of the main experiences is exploring the sanctuary’s narrow waterways by canoe or boat. The tidal nature of the Mandovi River means that accessibility to some channels can vary depending on water levels.
Visitors can reach Chorao by ferry from the Ribandar ferry wharf and then continue towards the sanctuary. The best season for birdwatching is generally October to March, when migratory birds are present. Early mornings and sunset are considered particularly good times for spotting wildlife.
For travellers interested in Goa’s natural environment rather than beaches and nightlife, the sanctuary offers a quiet experience surrounded by mangroves, waterways and birdlife.
