Goa Medical College & Hospital (GMC)

Goa Medical College (GMC), originally established as Escola Medico Cirurgica de Goa in 1842, is among the oldest medical colleges in Asia and the first in India. Initially created to train doctors for Portuguese Goa, it was renamed Goa Medical College in 1963 after integration into the Indian healthcare system. Today, GMC is affiliated with Goa University and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The campus, spread over 139 acres in Bambolim, houses modern lecture halls, laboratories, hostels, and a vast library. GMC offers undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD, MS, DM) programs across multiple disciplines, with an annual intake of 200 MBBS students and 86 postgraduate seats. The institution emphasizes both academic excellence and community service, producing generations of doctors, researchers, and public health experts.
The associated Goa Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) is the largest government hospital in the state, with over 1,500 beds and a newly inaugurated 540-bed super-specialty block. It provides advanced facilities including ICUs, emergency services, diagnostic labs, and specialty departments such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, and psychiatry. GMC also manages peripheral units like the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (Bambolim), TB & Chest Hospital (St. Inez), and rural/urban health centres.
GMC continues to uphold its legacy as a premier institution, balancing medical education, patient care, and research. Its alumni have contributed significantly to healthcare both in India and abroad, reinforcing its reputation as a cornerstone of medical training and service in Goa.
